Everyone will experience feelings of stress and anxiety many times throughout their lifetime. For example, you may feel stressed or anxious about a job interview, change of employment, redundancy, getting married, birth of a child, and many other different stressors in our lives.  We are able to cope with Stress and Anxiety for short periods however, when the anxiety becomes excessive it can become debilitating and may become an anxiety disorder.

 

There are many forms of anxiety disorders; some are very specific, like panic disorder, when you experience regular panic attacks generally related to a particular fear of phobia.Sometimes you may feel anxious or have a panic attack in a non specific situation unaware of what may have caused the attack. This form of anxiety is called general anxiety. General anxiety is often connected with social anxiety or social phobia. This type of anxiety is experienced in social situations when dealing with people triggering panic attacks.  It can be so paralysing that people cannot leave their home.  Often we create coping mechanisms to deal with the anxiety and may develop obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The original fear is usually hidden under the obsessive thoughts, and the anxiety is dealt with an irrational activity. This may be washing your hands continuously, or keep checking if the door is locked, or obsessing with food or exercise. Other ways of coping may include binge eating, drinking, smoking or other addictions.
